For those who don’t know me, i grew up in the 80’s in the hills of Tennessee. Its also known the south. You know, that part of the United States, from Tennessee, Virginia to Florida. This section in the United States is often (incorrectly) skipped when it comes to travels to the US. Tennessee is often depicted as redneck, conservative and spurious. Besides the fact that I spent quite a few years of my childhood here and go there to relax, it is a place full of beauty, passion and well worth the visit. These are my reason to love the sweet south and why you all should visit it.
The sweet South
The warm weather, comfort food and sipping on very sweet iced tea is a refreshing experience. The South is unlike any other place on Earth. The temperament, the soft accents and the friendly faces are what this region is all about. Don’t think that if you run into a Southerner, you’re going to get off without some story about the past. It’s the Southern way of showing that you belong here and that they want to involve you.
Then there is peach or pecan pie, grits and biscuits & gravy and then I think about my childhood in this area, catching fireflies in the soft pink twilight, big family gatherings and “very” hot summer nights. The south is enchanting, delightful and forgiving. The writer Jackson Brown said, “Treat her right because she can be very generous, you know, unforgettable.” But don’t just take his word or mine. Come with me and take a journey below that Appalachian line and enjoy all the things the South has to offer you.
What exactly is Southern hospitality? “And how do you define it? Whether there really is an answer? Nobody really knows. The best answer you can give is actually courtesy, loyalty, and home-cooked food. The states of Florida, Georgia,” South Carolina and Tennessee have charm, life passes just a little slower (even if it’s because of the heat), but you don’t pass anyone without saying goodbye, or as they say “how are y’all.” Almost all crossings in this area have no traffic light, yet it always moves on and whoever stops first also continues first, they don’t need a traffic light for that. No wonder I can’t resist the south.
Today we spend most all of our time on mobile phones. Not in the south! During dinner, people eat, talk, laugh and the mother of the family has collected all the cell phones before dinner. In the South, they don’t like to speed things up and prefer a slower pace. It gives everyone time to relax and reconnect or just chill. And since they all love discussions in the South, rushing is never a good idea.
Vegetarians will have a tough time here! Meat lovers, look no further than the South for barbecue dishes that are truly divine. This is the “real deal”. And believe me, no supermarket bought food is involved here. This is a holy grail of the south, and it can be quite drastic. Oven-roasted ribs come with and hand-rubbed marinade. Of which you will never hear what the recipe is unless you are family. This is more important than money. Pork, tenderloins, ribs, chicken, and slow cooking is sacred. People spend hours making sure their barbecue dishes are great. The Southerner’s summer dish is BBQ chicken. Fried chicken that is spicy, sweet and oily and the perfect comfort food. Here you will not find beer, but liters of sweetened iced tea. For dessert the pecan or peach pie and always homemade from only the freshest ingredients and almost always from there own garden.
A Southern home always has always a guest in the house and is connected to the community. They help neighbors in need. They offer you unsolicited directions if you are lost. That is if you don’t mind taking the time to hear a few anecdotes or settle for navigation guided by city landmarks that don’t mean anything to you and of course the latest local gossip.
The south is an escape from your rushed life.
A trip to the south will help you to relax and get away from the noisiness. It’s like taking a journey back in time. When things were simple and pennant. Take a walk in the city in the evening to appreciate the surroundings. See cities like St. Augustine, Memphis, Savannah, New Orleans, it seems as if time has stood still and the red pink evening sun makes it almost mythical.
The south has a variety of charm that is unique and well worth the time. It offers a mosaic of history, people, food and culture. This makes the “South one of the most distinctive regions in the United States. Skip New York and California and immerse yourself in the South and listen to Dixxie. Chances are you’ll fall in love like me.”
The story of pain
The story about slavery and the fight for equal rights has also taken place here. The name of Martin Luther King is inseparable from this part of the country. Be sure to visit Memphis and visit the civil right museum and the Lorraine motel. The heart and soul of the United States lies within in the South and is a story of pain, resilience and freedom. That’s why visiting the south makes a special destination that belongs on every bucket list!
